The sand and gravel quarry currently occupies c. 22.2 ha (54.8 acres) and includes a large amount of aggregate and block yard. There is also a weighbridge, silt ponds and an ESB sub station on the site.
The remainder of the lands are c.15.8 ha (39.35 acres) are currently in tillage are of excellent quality free draining soil in large open fields bound by natural hedging. The lands adjoin the quarry and are also accessed via a right of way over a tarmac avenue.
From reviewing the Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) Spatial Resources service, the underlying bedrock geology for the site is the Ballysteen Formation, a dolomitised limestone. Furthermore, the GSI service shows that in terms of quaternary geology, the site is situated on gravels derived from Limestone. The superficial sand and gravels have been worked across the site. No limestone has yet been extracted as far as we are aware.
